The hostage situation is believed to be taking place at a residence in Roubaix, near the border with Belgian, after a traffic stop went wrong. French media reported that heavily-armed men were inside and had fired at police.
It was not immediately clear how many people were being held hostage, or whether there is any link to the manhunt for several suspects in this month's terror attacks in Paris.
