It's not a power thing to most people in the US, beyond having the power to ensure that we never have to bend to an abusive government or invader. Firearms stand as a symbol for personal freedom in the minds of a lot of gun owners, because they were a vital part of how we became independent in the first place. It's the reason they're covered in the 2nd amendment to our constitution.
